What is Melasma?

Melasma is a common skin condition characterized by the development of brown or gray-brown patches, primarily on the face. These patches often appear on the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose, chin, and above the upper lip. Additionally, melasma can also affect other parts of the body exposed to the sun, such as the forearms and neck. It is much more common in women than men, particularly in pregnant women or those taking oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) medications.

Causes

The exact cause of melasma is not entirely understood, but several factors are known to trigger or worsen the condition:
